Dant, began crafting bourbon in Kentucky using an innovative “log still” design — a hollowed-out tree trunk lined with copper pipes. This method, though less expensive than a copper pot still, produced excellent whiskey and helped build Dant’s early success.

As the brand gained traction, J.B. Dant partnered with M.C. Beam of the famed Beam distilling family. Together, they operated as the Yellowstone Distillery, producing bourbon that even persisted through Prohibition under medicinal licensing. The combination of the Dant and Beam families would become one of bourbon’s enduring legacies.

A Modern Revival by Limestone Branch Distillery

Over the decades, the Yellowstone brand passed through several owners, including Diageo and eventually Luxco, before returning to its Beam family roots. In 2010, Paul and Stephen Beam — direct descendants of both the Beam and Dant lineages — founded Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky. Their goal: to revive Yellowstone bourbon to its original glory.

In partnership with Luxco (now part of MGP Ingredients, Inc.), Limestone Branch rediscovered and refined an old Beam family recipe.
