Warehouse Liquor L.E. Private Single Barrel (Barrel #220421)

PUBLISH DATE: November 23, 2022

Warehouse Liquor quietly released a Doc Swinson’s Straight Rye Whiskey Limited Edition Private Single Barrel, and those paying attention immediately recognized it as something special. While the Bourbon Club of Arkansas (BCA) did not have enough lead time to structure this as a formal joint barrel pick, the group publicly recommended it without hesitation, referring to it as an “off the books” pick — high praise within Arkansas whiskey circles.

Beyond the liquid, the release stood out visually with a striking waxed bottle and premium design. According to early tasters, however, the packaging was only the beginning — the whiskey inside more than delivered.

Tasting Notes

Nose:
Orange creamsicle with the familiar oatmeal note often associated with MGP rye. Light anise, wet charred oak, and burnt sugar on the backside.

Palate:
Warm honey and orange peel upfront. Very light anise follows, with baker’s chocolate developing on the back of the tongue. The burn is soft, controlled, and pleasant.

Finish:
Black licorice, honey, and a touch of oak — notably without tannic bitterness. Exceptionally long, clean finish.

Overall Rating: 🥃🥃🥃🥃
“You are out of your mind not to buy one of these at this price.”

Background: Doc Swinson’s Whiskey

Doc Swinson’s Whiskey is a modern American whiskey brand built around barrel sourcing, blending, and finishing, rather than operating as a traditional legacy distillery. The brand has become well known among enthusiasts for limited, high-proof releases paired with careful barrel selection and distinctive presentation.

Sourcing & MGP Influence

Many Doc Swinson’s rye releases — including this Warehouse Liquor private barrel — are sourced from MGP Ingredients in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. MGP rye is widely respected for its consistency and recognizable profile, often showing:

  • Balanced rye spice and sweetness
  • Notes of anise, citrus peel, and baking spice
  • A clean, structured mouthfeel well-suited for barrel-proof bottlings

While MGP produces the distillate, Doc Swinson’s adds value through barrel selection, proofing decisions, and final presentation, allowing private barrels to express individuality.

Limited Editions & Private Barrels

Doc Swinson’s places strong emphasis on small-run and retailer-specific releases, which are typically:

  • Bottled at or near barrel proof
  • Minimally filtered
  • One-time releases with no planned repeats
  • Presented with premium visual identity

This approach aligns closely with Arkansas’s barrel-pick culture, where quality of liquid outweighs marketing hype.

Why This Pick Matters

According to the original announcement, Happy at Warehouse Liquor did an exceptional job securing this barrel and its accompanying samples. Combined with strong endorsement from BCA — even outside a formal pick structure — this release stood out as a high-confidence recommendation for rye drinkers.

Between its age, proof, balance, and finish, this Doc Swinson’s private barrel exemplifies why well-selected sourced rye continues to earn respect among seasoned whiskey enthusiasts.

Both bottles have dark labels reading “Doc Swinson’s Straight Rye Whiskey.” Behind them is a bright yellow starburst sign that says “STORE PICK! Doc Swinson RYE! $69.99.” Shelves of other liquor bottles are visible in the blurred background.
