The artwork

A crown for a nine-year barrel

Five Star’s custom barrel-pick sticker gives this release its name. A crowned eagle sits on a Copper & Cask barrel with a whiskey glass at its side, framed by copper lettering and ornate scrollwork.

The design calls out the nine-year age and the store’s exclusive selection. It also echoes Copper & Cask’s eagle imagery, connecting the custom artwork to the bottle’s existing label.

For readers who followed Five Star’s earlier picks, the store has used distinctive artwork before. Its Midnight Heist Larceny selection explored a different piece of bourbon storytelling.

The people behind the whiskey

Copper & Cask’s history: an independent bottler

Copper & Cask launched in 2021 through Latitude Beverage Company. Based in Rhode Island, the brand is an independent blender and bottler that sources whiskey from other distilleries.

Its role includes selecting barrels, managing aging and cask finishing, and creating single-barrel and small-batch releases. Barrel Master Stephen Corrigan leads the program.

According to the brand’s official company history, most of its whiskey is distilled at MGP in Indiana. It also sources whiskey from Kentucky, Canada, and elsewhere. The company says its releases are bottled in Rhode Island at cask strength without chill filtration.

That distinction matters for this bottle: MGP distilled the bourbon, Copper & Cask is the bottling brand, and Five Star Liquor selected the barrel. The nine-year whiskey predates the Copper & Cask brand’s launch.

The distillery behind it: MGP in Lawrenceburg

The Indiana distillery’s roots reach back to 1847, when George Ross established Rossville Distillery in Lawrenceburg. MGP purchased the facility in 2011, adding the historic site to its whiskey-making operations.

MGP’s distillery history documents those origins and the later Ross & Squibb name. For The Copper King, the original barrel label directly identifies MGPI of Indiana as the source.
