A custom Maker’s Mark finish

Ten staves. Three profiles.

The Curveball’s finishing recipe puts Roasted French Mendiant up front: six of the ten oak staves are Mendiant, joined by three Maker’s Mark 46 staves and one Toasted French Spice stave. Baked American Pure 2 and Seared French Cuvée are both left out.

The label identifies it as Kentucky straight bourbon whisky barrel finished with ten oak staves. Its 54.50% ABV works out to 109 proof, with no age statement visible on the supplied front label.

Maker’s Mark’s Private Selection program starts with mature, cask-strength bourbon. Retailers choose a combination of finishing staves, and the whisky spends an additional nine weeks in the distillery’s limestone cellar. The wood recipe gives each selection its own direction.

Inside the recipe

The Curveball stave table

The five stave options use different oak, cuts and heat treatments to influence the bourbon. The counts below come from the bottle label; the flavor descriptions explain the stave profiles.

3 · 46 6 · Mendiant 1

3 Maker’s Mark 46 · 6 Roasted French Mendiant · 1 Toasted French Spice

The Curveball’s recipe: 0 / 0 / 3 / 6 / 1
Stave type Count Oak & treatment Associated flavor profile
Baked American Pure 2 0 American oak; baked low and slow Vanilla, brown sugar, caramel and gentle spice
Seared French Cuvée 0 Ridge-cut French oak; infrared seared Toasted oak and caramel
Maker’s Mark 46 3 Seared French oak Vanilla, caramel, baking spice and dried fruit
Roasted French Mendiant 6 Classic-cut French oak; cooked low and slow Milk chocolate, buttery nuts, coffee and dried dark fruit
Toasted French Spice 1 French oak; toasted at high and low temperatures Warming spice and smoky accents

These are general stave characteristics, not tasting notes from an ArkansasLiquor.com review of The Curveball. Stave counts describe the wood recipe; they do not translate directly into percentages of flavor.

Why Mendiant matters

Six staves point toward chocolate, nuts and coffee.

Roasted French Mendiant takes its name from a French chocolate confection topped with nuts and dried fruit. Maker’s Mark describes the stave as bringing milk chocolate, buttery nut, coffee and dried dark-fruit notes.

Introduced in 2021, Mendiant replaced Roasted French Mocha for new Private Selection recipes. Its classic-cut French oak is cooked low and slow, giving it a different profile from the older Mocha option.

With six Mendiant staves in The Curveball, a chocolate-and-nut direction is a reasonable expectation, with vanilla and baking spice from the other profiles. That is a reading of the recipe, rather than a confirmed description of how this bourbon tastes.
