About Woodford Reserve Distillery
Woodford Reserve is produced at one of Kentucky’s most historic distilleries, located in Versailles, Kentucky. The site traces its roots back to the early 1800s and is known for its meticulous approach to bourbon production. Unlike many large-scale operations, Woodford Reserve continues to utilize copper pot stills, a method more commonly associated with Scotch whisky, which contributes to its signature depth and complexity.
The distillery is especially well known for its Double Oaked bourbon, which undergoes a secondary maturation in a heavily toasted, lightly charred barrel. This additional aging step amplifies notes of caramel, chocolate, and oak—qualities that have made Double Oaked a staple among bourbon enthusiasts nationwide.
Barrel Finish Select picks like this one allow clubs and retailers to highlight barrels that closely align with the profile fans love, while still showcasing subtle variations unique to that selection.
Tasting Notes (Quoted Review)
Gary Penna – February 4, 2025 (Facebook)
Color: Chestnut
Nose: Deep chocolate and caramel. Twix bar mixed with vanilla bean.
Palate: Smooth as a frozen lake, so easy to drink, soft on the palate, zero burn and an incredible burst of chocolate notes and soft oak. I then picked up what was 100% to me a smoked barbecue note on the finish, which normally I would be like, whoa!! However, in this it was gloriously good!
Finish: Smooth, smooth and smooth. Pretty long finish for a low proof whiskey. The caramel and chocolate notes linger. This does have the foundation of the original Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. It’s not quite up to the original one, but it’s pretty damn close! That’s the first thing I noticed when we first tasted it is how close it was to the OG one.
Overall: 🥃🥃🥃.5
Final Thoughts
This Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Barrel Finish Select stays true to the rich, dessert-leaning profile that made the original Double Oaked a fan favorite, while delivering a club-selected experience that drinks effortlessly at 45.2% ABV. For those who appreciate chocolate-forward bourbons with polished oak and an easygoing finish, this release fits comfortably into the BCA portfolio.
