Central Arkansas Fermenters

Central Arkansas Fermenters (CAF)

Building Arkansas’ Fermentation Community, One Batch at a Time

The Central Arkansas Fermenters (CAF) is a long-standing homebrewing and fermentation club serving Central Arkansas and surrounding communities. Focused on education, experimentation, and fellowship, CAF brings together hobbyists who share a passion for creating beer and other fermented beverages at home.

While beer is the primary focus, CAF represents the broader fermentation culture—the same grassroots foundation that fuels today’s craft breweries, cideries, and distilleries.

Who Are the Central Arkansas Fermenters?

Central Arkansas Fermenters is a member-driven, non-commercial homebrew club open to brewers of all experience levels—from first-time extract brewers to advanced all-grain and experimental fermenters.

CAF is not affiliated with any brewery, retailer, or distributor. Its purpose is simple:

  • Share knowledge
  • Improve skills
  • Foster community
  • Celebrate fermentation

Many members brew strictly as a hobby, while others use CAF as a learning ground before pursuing professional paths in the craft beverage industry.

What CAF Members Brew

While beer styles dominate club activity, CAF embraces fermentation broadly:

  • 🍺 Beer (all styles: lagers, IPAs, stouts, sours, saisons, experimental)
  • 🍯 Mead
  • 🍎 Cider
  • 🍇 Wine
  • 🫙 Kombucha & mixed fermentation projects

This diversity makes CAF especially relevant as Arkansas’ beverage culture continues to expand beyond traditional beer.

Meetings, Education & Collaboration

CAF typically holds regular meetings where members:

  • Share and taste homebrewed creations
  • Discuss recipes, ingredients, and techniques
  • Troubleshoot fermentation challenges
  • Learn from experienced brewers
  • Introduce newcomers to equipment and processes

Educational topics often include:

  • Yeast selection and management
  • Water chemistry
  • Mash techniques
  • Temperature control
  • Sanitation and quality control
  • Style guidelines and judging feedback

Group brew days and collaborative projects are also common, reinforcing the club’s hands-on learning environment.

Joining Central Arkansas Fermenters is straightforward and affordable, making it easy for newcomers to get involved.

According to CAF’s official membership information:

You can join the club by paying your dues online. Our annual membership drive meeting is in February, so your dues are good from February through January of the following year. You can join as an individual, or if you have a spouse, significant other, or brew partner, you can both join at a discount.

2025 Membership Dues

  • 2025 Individual Dues: $35.00
  • 2025 Couples Dues: $60.00

The couples membership option is ideal for brew partners who collaborate on batches or simply enjoy learning and participating together.

Competitions & the Broader Brewing Scene

CAF members regularly participate in:

  • Homebrew competitions
  • BJCP-sanctioned judging and stewarding
  • Regional beer festivals and educational events

Like many homebrew clubs nationwide, CAF acts as a feeder system for professional brewing talent. Numerous commercial brewers across the U.S.—including Arkansas—started in clubs just like CAF.

CAF’s Role in Arkansas’ Craft Culture

Central Arkansas Fermenters plays a quiet but important role in the state’s beverage ecosystem:

  • Encourages experimentation without commercial pressure
  • Preserves technical brewing knowledge at the hobbyist level
  • Strengthens community connections among makers
  • Promotes responsible, informed enjoyment of alcohol

In short, CAF represents the roots of Arkansas craft, where curiosity and creativity come before branding and profit.
