A major development in the Arkansas whiskey community was announced this week as Arkansas Barrel Heads (ABH) and the Bourbon Club of Arkansas (BCA) formally established a new partnership that strengthens both organizations while preserving what makes each unique.

The announcement was shared by Steve Crowe on January 18, 2026, via Facebook, outlining a relationship that many in the community view as both natural and long overdue.

Two Communities, One Shared Standard

Arkansas Barrel Heads was intentionally formed as an open, discussion-driven whiskey group — a place where anyone can learn, share opinions, and enjoy the hobby without barriers. In contrast, the Bourbon Club of Arkansas has long operated as a selective, invitation-only club known for its award-winning barrel picks, charitable focus, and tight-knit membership culture.

Founded by Gary Penna, BCA is a back-to-back National Whiskey Club of the Year winner at the ASCOT Awards, and has built a national reputation for quality, integrity, and community involvement.

The announcement makes clear: these two groups were never competitors — and still aren’t.

FAQ Question:
What does “earned” mean for Bourbon Club of Arkansas membership?
(Source: Comment thread on Arkansas Barrel Heads official Facebook announcement, January 18, 2026; Keith Haynie)

FAQ Answer:
Bourbon Club of Arkansas membership has always been invitation-only and earned. Historically, individuals became members either by earning the respect of a BCA administrator through positive engagement and contribution, or by being personally vouched for by an existing member who risked their own standing in the club.

With the newly announced partnership between Arkansas Barrel Heads and the Bourbon Club of Arkansas, this philosophy remains unchanged. The partnership allows administrators from both communities to better observe member conduct, participation, and overall contribution, helping distinguish positive community members from those who consistently foster negativity.

While Arkansas Barrel Heads remains open and inclusive, Bourbon Club of Arkansas maintains higher membership standards. Activity alone is not sufficient — character, decorum, and respectful engagement are essential.

What the Partnership Means

Under this new partnership:

  • Arkansas Barrel Heads will serve as the primary community pool for future BCA membership selection
  • There is no application and no sign-up process
  • BCA membership remains invitation-based, intentional, and earned

Consideration for BCA membership will be based on the totality of a person’s participation within ABH, including:

  • Engagement and activity
  • Quality of discussion and contributions
  • Conduct, decorum, and character
  • Support of the broader whiskey and local community

In short: how you show up matters.

BCA Expands Membership Ceiling

In conjunction with this partnership, the Bourbon Club of Arkansas is increasing its membership cap:

  • Previous cap: 300 members
  • New cap: 500 members

Effective immediately, BCA will begin adding up to 200 members from the Arkansas Barrel Heads community through this invitation-based process.

What Does Not Change

  • Arkansas Barrel Heads remains open, inclusive, and discussion-focused
  • BCA remains selective, purpose-built, and club-oriented
  • No new barriers are introduced for ABH members
  • No automatic or guaranteed BCA membership is implied

The only real change is clarity: the road to BCA now begins at ABH.

Why This Matters for Arkansas Whiskey

This partnership formalizes what many already felt — that both communities share values around respect, quality, charity, and authentic engagement. By creating a clear bridge between an open community and a selective club, Arkansas continues to set itself apart nationally for how its whiskey culture is built: intentionally, responsibly, and with community at the center.

More details are expected as the partnership evolves, but for now, one thing is certain: the Arkansas whiskey scene just took another meaningful step forward.

Arkansas Barrel Heads – Official Announcement

Many of you already know that Abe and I have longstanding ties to the Bourbon Club of Arkansas (BCA). Abe serves as an admin there, and I’ve been a member since the early days — both before the original club was lost and again after its return. BCA is a back-to-back National Whiskey Club of the Year ASCOT Award winner, founded by Gary Penna many years ago, and has always maintained a strong reputation for exceptional, award-winning barrel picks, a focus on charity, and a genuine commitment to community. Those values are not accidental, and they matter.

From the beginning, Arkansas Barrel Heads was intentionally created as a group, not a club. That distinction wasn’t semantics. ABH exists to be open, welcoming, and accessible — a place where anyone can come in, talk whiskey, learn, share opinions, and enjoy the hobby without barriers. BCA, by design, is a more exclusive club, and that structure has served it extremely well. The two were never meant to compete, and they don’t.

Because of the natural overlap in values, culture, and community standards, we’re announcing an official partnership that feels both organic and long overdue:

Arkansas Barrel Heads will now serve as the primary community pool from which future BCA memberships will be selected.

This is not an application process, and it is not something to “sign up” for. Consideration for BCA membership will be based on the totality of who you are within the ABH community. That includes, but is not limited to, how you participate in discussions, your overall engagement, how you conduct yourself in group conversations, and the way you contribute to the broader whiskey and local community. Activity matters. Character matters. Decorum matters.

In short, BCA membership will continue to be invitation-based, intentional, and earned, just as it always has been. Furthermore, in conjunction with this announcement, BCA is raising its membership ceiling from the current 300 members to 500. This means that effective immediately, they will be actively adding up to 200 of our members to their rolls.

We believe this partnership strengthens both communities while preserving what makes each of them distinct. ABH remains open, inclusive, and discussion-driven. BCA remains selective, focused, and purpose-built. The bridge between them simply reflects the shared standards many of you already embody.

More details will come as this partnership develops, but for now, know this: nothing about ABH changes, except that the road to BCA now starts right here at ABH — and how you show up here matters now more than ever.

🥃 Cheers
