🥃 About the Old Forester Single Barrel Program

The Old Forester Single Barrel Program gives retailers and private groups the rare opportunity to select their own unique barrel from the Old Forester distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. Each barrel develops its own character based on warehouse location, floor, and micro-climate, resulting in one-of-a-kind flavor profiles that can’t be replicated.

These releases are offered in two styles:

  • 100 Proof Single Barrel: A more traditional proofed-down version showcasing balance and richness.
  • Barrel Strength Single Barrel: A pure, cask-strength expression bottled exactly as it comes from the barrel — often exceeding 130 proof — capturing Old Forester’s boldest and most concentrated flavors.

Because every barrel is unique, flavor and proof vary from bottle to bottle, making each release collectible and memorable.

🏭 A Brief History of Old Forester

Founded in 1870 by George Garvin Brown, Old Forester holds the distinction of being America’s first bottled bourbon. At a time when whiskey was often sold from barrels of questionable purity, Brown revolutionized the industry by sealing his bourbon in glass bottles — guaranteeing quality and consistency.

Throughout Prohibition (1920-1933), Old Forester was one of the few distilleries granted a federal permit to produce “medicinal whiskey,” allowing the brand to continue uninterrupted when most others closed. Today, Old Forester remains under the ownership of Brown-Forman, still produced on historic Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville.

The brand’s mash bill — 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley — delivers the signature Old Forester balance of sweet caramel and bold spice. The higher rye content contributes to its distinctive baking-spice kick, often described as cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, complemented by notes of banana, toffee, and oak.

🔥 Tasting Notes (General Barrel Strength Profile)

While each single barrel offers its own nuance, the Barrel Strength Old Forester series typically showcases:

  • Nose: Vanilla bean, caramel, toasted oak, and hints of ripe banana.
  • Palate: Bold layers of brown sugar, dark cherry, baking spice, and cocoa.
  • Finish: Long, warm, and oak-forward with lingering sweetness and spice.
