A close-up of the round end of a wooden bourbon barrel marked “Single Barrel Select Barrel A.” The wood has a stamped Buffalo Trace Distillery logo and production markings including “KY DSP 113 RC53G Bourbon Whiskey” and a filled date. Handwritten signatures and notes in marker cover parts of the wood, including names and dates. A small black and gold sticker near the bottom reads “Single Barrel Select 20238,” and above the barrel head is a small brass sign with the barrel designation. The scene is inside a wood-paneled storage area.

Arkansas Whiskey Community Barrel Pick Supports Arkansas National Guard Charities

In September 2021, Gary Penna announced an upcoming barrel pick that combined limited availability, charitable giving, and an ambitious second life for the barrel itself—hallmarks of the Arkansas whiskey community at its best.

Because demand was expected to far exceed supply, bottles from this barrel pick were allocated using a randomized selection process. Every member of the group was automatically entered into a list, with one entry per household, and an auto-generator determined who would have the opportunity to purchase a bottle. Members were asked not to post “in” comments or contact administrators privately until full details were released.

Pricing & Charitable Impact

Each bottle was priced at $45, with $15 from every bottle donated directly to charity. Proceeds supported both the Arkansas Army National Guard and the Arkansas Air National Guard, reinforcing the community’s ongoing commitment to giving back to those who serve.

A Second Life for the Barrel

Adding a unique twist, plans were also announced to send the emptied barrel to Mexico after bottling. There, it would spend two additional years aging double añejo tequila from Corazón Tequila—extending the story of the barrel well beyond its whiskey origins.

What to Expect Next

At the time of the announcement, additional details—including timing and bottle distribution logistics—were still forthcoming. Members were encouraged to ask questions publicly while awaiting the next update.

This release stands as an early example of how Arkansas whiskey groups have blended limited barrel picks, transparency, charitable giving, and creative barrel finishes into experiences that resonate far beyond the bottle.
