The square presentation bottle is covered in ornate gold scrollwork, with \u201cDAD\u2019S RESERVE\u201d dominating the front. It is exactly the sort of package designed to catch your eye while walking through Costco \u2014 and exactly the sort of bottle someone might grab for Father\u2019s Day without studying the small print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-000001e\">Then I turned it around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-000001f\">Aged 2 years. 80 proof. 40% ABV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000020\">The Costco shelf placard identifies item #2076866 as \u201cMano\u2019s Father\u2019s Day Bourbon\u201d and prices the 750 mL bottle at $41.99. The rear label calls it Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, says it was distilled in Kentucky, and identifies R House Spirits in Clinton, Missouri as the bottler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000021\">What it does not give us is the Kentucky distillery, mash bill, warehouse, barrel information, batch information or any other production detail that helps explain a $42 price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000022\">I have not tasted Dad\u2019s Reserve. I left this bottle sitting on the Costco shelf. Under current federal standards, straight bourbon must be made from a mash containing at least 51% corn, distilled at no more than 160 proof, entered into new charred oak at no more than 125 proof, and aged for at least two years. Straight bourbon also cannot use the coloring, flavoring or blending materials permitted in some other whiskey categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000059\">\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000055\">\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000053\">2 YEARS<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000054\">Minimum aging requirement for straight bourbon<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000058\">\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000056\">80 PROOF<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000057\">Minimum bottling strength for whiskey<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-000005a\">Those minimums do not make Dad\u2019s Reserve bad whiskey. Young bourbon can be good, and 80-proof bourbon can be good. But when a bottle asks $41.99, I expect some reason for the premium: more age, more proof, known provenance, a distinctive mash bill, barrel details, or something else compelling about the whiskey itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-000005b\">Dad\u2019s Reserve gives me none of those selling points. Looking at a two-year-old, 80-proof whiskey this light, my sarcastic first reaction was: \u201cThis is getting awfully close to aged vodka.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000063\">That is a joke, not a technical description. Dad\u2019s Reserve is bourbon. Color alone does not determine quality, darker whiskey is not automatically better, and reducing whiskey to 80 proof can make it appear lighter. Barrel location, entry proof and maturation conditions also matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000064\">Still, appearance is part of the first impression. It identifies the item as \u201cMano\u2019s Father\u2019s Day Bourbon.\u201d That matters because Mano\u2019s specializes in presentation-driven gifts: its current catalog includes deep-etched and hand-painted Father\u2019s Day bottles, crystal decanters and custom-etched spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000071\">Once you see Dad\u2019s Reserve through that lens, the pricing begins to make more sense. This looks less like an exceptional whiskey that happened to receive fancy packaging and more like a Father\u2019s Day gift concept where the presentation is a major part of the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000072\">There is nothing inherently wrong with that. A buyer may value the keepsake bottle after the whiskey is gone. It\u2019s Still There.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-000007a\">I had already seen Dad\u2019s Reserve sitting at the Little Rock Costco before Father\u2019s Day. The bottle was still on the shelf when I photographed it on July 27, 2026 \u2014 well after the holiday it was specifically designed to celebrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-000007b\">That does not prove why it has lingered. But for a seasonal Father\u2019s Day bourbon, missing the obvious gifting window makes the $41.99 price stand out even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gsbp-000007e\">\n<div class=\"gsbp-000007c\">\u201cYou\u2019d be better buying your father a pair of socks than this whiskey.\u201d<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gsbp-000007d\">At least he\u2019ll use the socks.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"gsbp-0000092 alignfull\">\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000091\">\n<div class=\"gsbp-0000081\">THE SOURCING MYSTERY<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gsbp-0000082\">Who Actually Made Dad\u2019s Reserve Bourbon?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000083\">The rear label gives us two different pieces of geography: \u201cDistilled in Kentucky\u201d and \u201cBottled by R House Spirits | Clinton, MO.\u201d Those statements should not be confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000084\">Federal labeling rules distinguish a bottler from a distiller. A label that says \u201cbottled by\u201d identifies the bottling function; a named distiller would normally be identified with language such as \u201cdistilled by.\u201d In other words, the R House Spirits statement does not tell us who distilled this bourbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000085\">The Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey designation does tell us something useful: federal rules allow a state to appear as part of the whiskey designation only when the distillation and required aging occurred there. Bottling can happen elsewhere. One current federal trail does make Clinton interesting: TTB\u2019s public permittee data includes spirits producers and bottlers, and a Clinton operation named AI Bottling, LLC \/ Advanced Innovative Bottling is part of that landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000096\">AI Brands\u2019 own website says Advanced Innovative Bottling began as a contract manufacturing company in Kansas City in 2014, moved to Clinton in 2017, later became AI Bottling, LLC, and now operates at 932 N. 4th St. in Clinton. The company also has bourbon experience through Truman Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-0000097\">This is an investigative lead, not a conclusion. I have not confirmed that R House Spirits is a trade name, customer, bottling-on-account identity or other affiliate of AI Bottling. I would not publish \u201cR House Spirits is AI Bottling\u201d as fact without documentation from the companies or the exact label approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gsbp-000009a\">\n<a class=\"gsbp-0000098\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ttb.gov\/public-information\/foia\/list-of-permittees\">TTB Public Permittee Lists<\/a>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"gsbp-0000099\" href=\"https:\/\/aibrandsusa.com\/\">AI Brands \/ AI Bottling<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"gsbp-00000b4 alignfull\">\n<div class=\"gsbp-00000b3\">\n<div class=\"gsbp-00000ad\">THE $41.99 PROBLEM<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gsbp-00000ae\">Costco Is Asking Dad\u2019s Reserve to Compete With Real Bourbon Heavyweights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-00000af\">The biggest issue is not that Dad\u2019s Reserve is young. It is what else I can buy for less money. In my local shopping, bottles such as Jim Beam Black 7 Year, Old Grand-Dad, Evan Williams, Early Times Bottled-in-Bond, Very Old Barton and Benchmark can all come in below this $41.99 bottle. When it appears at normal retail instead of secondary-market pricing, even Weller Special Reserve can be cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gsbp-00000b0\">Retail prices and availability vary by store, and Weller in particular can be difficult to find.
