On February 4, ArkansasLiquor.com reported in Gutter Bound Set to Close Without Buyer or Investor<\/a><\/strong> that the Hurricane Mills distillery was searching for a buyer or investor after its owners said they had exhausted the financial resources they could personally continue putting into the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was still hope then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone might step forward. New capital might provide another path. The business Sanford and Jess Markham had fought to keep alive might continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 8, Gutter Bound provided the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gutter Bound is also attempting to sell its distillery equipment. If the equipment is purchased before December 31, the family says the doors could close sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the Closing: The Dream Behind Gutter Bound Distillery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To understand what is ending, it helps to understand what Sanford and Jess originally hoped to build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An archived version of Gutter Bound Distillery’s former website, preserved by the Internet Archive, offers a remarkably personal look at the family behind the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanford Markham, Gutter Bound’s master distiller, wrote that the vision began taking shape in 2018<\/strong> as he talked through what he called a crazy dream of starting a distillery with his friend Kyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jess listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she jumped in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanford credited Jess with navigating the federal, state and local requirements, along with the red tape required to transform the idea into a legal, operating distillery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distillery was not an investment somebody handed to the Markhams. It began as an idea, and the family built the operation around it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Generations of Distilling Traditions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sanford said the recipes and processes behind Gutter Bound grew from generations of time-tested distilling traditions<\/strong>, combined with his own experimentation and trial and error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His goal was straightforward: find high-quality grains and ingredients and use them to produce top-shelf, small-batch, one-of-a-kind spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n

That history matters now because Gutter Bound was never simply a tasting room attached to a still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recipes were personal. The work was personal. The risks were personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanford and Jess’s daughter, Alexis Markham, learned far more than front-of-house operations. Gutter Bound said she could move from bottling and wax sealing to cleaning fermenters and stills, giving tastings and making cocktails behind the bar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Max Markham learned the production side. Gutter Bound said he had mastered making a mash and began learning the distilling process in 2020. Sanford’s father, Allen McCampbell, was known around the distillery as \u201cPapa.\u201d Gutter Bound described him as a man who had never met a stranger, a storyteller who could keep visitors entertained for hours and someone always willing to lend a hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a place that ultimately became about people as much as spirits, \u201cPublic Relations Liaison\u201d may have been the perfect title.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

And Then There Was Allyson<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Gutter Bound’s archived website introduced John, Allyson, Mason and Tucker Huddleston as part of its \u201cQuality Control Crew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allyson helped with the interior decorating, worked behind the bar and, according to the distillery, was \u201cto blame for the name Gutter Bound Distillery.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, the website intentionally did not explain the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It simply told visitors there was a funny story behind the name and that they should ask about it when they came in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

There is something fitting about that unfinished story now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you make one final trip to Gutter Bound before the doors close, maybe ask how Allyson came up with the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gutter Bound Opened Months Before the World Changed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gutter Bound officially opened in October 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing could hardly have been more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within months, COVID changed tourism, hospitality, tasting rooms and small businesses across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came something far more personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cancer changed the Markham family’s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWithin months, COVID changed the world. Not long after that, cancer changed ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There were times when it would have been easier to walk away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They continued because they loved the place, believed in what they were building and had customers who kept showing up.<\/p>\n\n\n

Why Is Gutter Bound Distillery Closing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The immediate reason is financial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its August announcement, the family pointed directly to the difficulty of keeping a small independent distillery financially sustainable in the current economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is an important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in Hurricane Mills near Interstate 40, the distillery sits along a route traveled constantly by Arkansans heading toward Nashville and other parts of Middle Tennessee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was easy to pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was also easy to say, \u201cWe’ll stop next time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That assumption now has an expiration date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is an economic reason Gutter Bound is closing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
